When Wayback
Sunday, July 26th, 2009There was a time when I put everything on my website: the simple statement that I went to a party, my vacation photos or - worse yet - go out photos. Fortunately, Internet is fleeting, though there is the WaybackWhenMachine , since 1996 web pages archive.
By hosting and my private life I started after a few times for an extended period abroad had been overseas and my new friends wanted to keep informed of my life here. I made good use of my experience as a web designer and twittered / hyvete / proto Facebookte on kirstenvos.nl.
Since these overseas friends not spoke Dutch, were pictures the best way to show what I was doing, because offering translated pages 'then' (less than five years ago) was not as easy as it is today. It was also much easier to upload photos to my site than texts: 100 new photos place much quicker than a new page. Because I made that site in html, with the necessary Javascript, DHTML and Flash applications code for special effects and photo albums navigation.
The result was that large parts of my private life publicly owned. That everyone could see, from customers to total strangers, I found a problem sometimes, but shielding the parts of my site with passwords was just too complicated a Tag. I ventured a few attempts, but did not really succeed. Also I had at first little else to offer than photographs and, if I was blocking, I could make my site as well slam. I thought then. Wayback when.
For years I held to that, not cumbersome, set-up: the latest version of static KirstenVos.nl I had to create a new page to add text, create a dozen icons and links change in at least six other files, regardless of the home page. I was quietly occupied for half a day, because with HTML could also again soon everything goes wrong: the day that I miss just clicked and everything was lost, what the hours before I had so carefully programmed, I can remember well.
My own design really began when I was pinching from 2003 as a part time student of Journalism and Media regularly publish articles were then photographs. Almost every week I had the hassle of HTML, scripting and icon customization through wrestling. Yet I have until 2008 my "own look" given for a jacket made by another. I made since March of that year for the blog Indian 3.0 using WordPress and within weeks I could myself not to even put that html misery to begin. So I decided to convert the trade, and soon, because I still had need of a face on the internet that public visits was because my freelance work since 2007 had taken a decent flight.
Meanwhile I have the legacy of the development of the site address. Nowadays I have more to say than pictures from trips abroad, moreover, who plays in the world offer does not fit with my professional work. Private photos are - if I still liked them - so to my Facebook and MySpace account moved. The only part of my old design that I have retained a cutout of a picture I during a holiday in southern France in 1994 have taken a statue in the garden of the Musée Oceanograpique in Monaco. Everyone all the time I show my holiday is over. Internet is increasingly to resemble real life.
