Philadelphia: the city of Independence
Thursday, January 22nd, 2009
Marloes was pretty definite about "Kir, we HAVE to Philadelphia." I did not so had no idea what's so special about that city, but I had never been there, so it seemed like fun. After a day in the freezing cold of "Philly" to have been I totally agree with her and I will give the message: if you have the chance, go to Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania. I have felt that the Americans about 300 years ago has moved to choose independence. And I had a moment with Obama.
Before, when the U.S. still existed in 13 states, the geographic center was Philadelphia. And in the center of the old United States, the Declaration of Independence recorded and subsequently approved by Congress. Symbol of independence, the Liberty Bell, the bell from the old town hall in Philadelphia. During the war with England, they have this clock hidden in Allentown, PA. The first flag for the independent States of America is made in the town of Rocky, one by Betsy Ross. In her house we came to Barack Obama, who asked me for a photo with him.
I found it very odd that this city had played such a crucial role in the history of America, especially because - at least for me - so unknown. Now I understand why. "Philly" was the second largest city in the British Empire after London. It was, as I mentioned earlier, central to the former U.S. and is the first of the new capital has been USA. The Dutch, among others, Peter Stuyvesant, have played a prominent role here, in the province who once was called New Netherland. On Wikipedia you can find more on this.
The city of Rocky Quakers and feels different than Washington. When you get to the Jefferson Memorial feels serene, dignified and just. Despite the many bad stories, especially Philadelphia feels rebellious, proud and independent. The city boasts a liberality of which I've never before felt in America.
